When Should You See a Urologist for Prostate Problems?
Practical guidance on timing specialist review for urinary symptoms, retention and prostate health concerns.

Dr. Aman Chandra
MBBS, MS, MCh (Urology)

Mild urinary changes can be monitored, but some prostate-related symptoms need timely specialist care to protect bladder and kidney health.
Why timing matters
Long-standing obstruction can strain the bladder and, in selected cases, affect the upper tracts. Earlier review does not always mean surgery — it often means clearer diagnosis and safer monitoring.
See a urologist sooner if you notice
- Sudden inability to pass urine
- Recurrent infections with poor emptying
- Blood in urine
- Symptoms not improving with initial care
- Painful urination with fever or feeling systemically unwell
- Progressive weak stream with incomplete emptying
What a prostate visit may involve
Expect a focused history, examination and discussion of prior reports. Tests may include urine analysis, ultrasound, PSA where appropriate after counselling, and flow or residual urine assessment. Findings guide whether medicines, further investigation or procedures are discussed.
Treatment pathways in outline
Care may start with lifestyle advice and medicines. If symptoms remain significant or complications appear, options such as bipolar TURP or laser prostatectomy may be considered in selected cases after evaluation. Cancer concerns follow separate diagnostic pathways.
Follow-up after starting care
Report new retention, fever, heavy bleeding or sudden worsening. Routine follow-up checks whether symptoms and emptying are improving and whether the plan needs adjustment.
