Understanding Urethroplasty
What urethroplasty involves, who it may help, and how it differs from endoscopic stricture treatments.

Urethroplasty reconstructs a narrowed urethra. It is often considered for longer, denser or recurrent strictures when endoscopic treatments are less durable.
What urethroplasty aims to do
The goal is to restore a patent urethral channel with a durable repair. Techniques vary — excision and anastomosis or tissue transfer approaches — depending on stricture length, location and tissue quality after evaluation.
Who may be considered for urethroplasty
- Longer or complex strictures
- Recurrent narrowing after prior endoscopic treatment
- Selected patients where durable reconstruction is preferred after counselling
How it differs from VIU
VIU is an endoscopic incision of scar tissue and may suit selected short strictures. Urethroplasty is open or specialised reconstructive surgery aimed at more definitive repair when anatomy and history support that approach. Neither is automatically “better” for every patient.
Evaluation before surgery
Mapping length and location, reviewing prior procedures and assessing overall health guide technique selection. Imaging and endoscopy findings are discussed so expectations about catheter time and recovery are clear before theatre.
Recovery and follow-up
Recovery and catheter duration vary by technique. Your surgeon will explain expected healing, activity limits, follow-up visits and signs that need early review — such as fever, heavy bleeding or inability to void after catheter removal.
Realistic expectations
Many patients achieve improved flow after successful reconstruction, but outcomes depend on stricture complexity and healing. Recurrence can still occur in some cases; ongoing follow-up remains important.
